Fall Prevention at Home

A room-by-room checklist for reducing the leading cause of senior injury.

One in four adults over 65 falls each year, and most falls happen at home during ordinary activities.

Start with the floor: remove throw rugs, secure cords along walls, and clear pathways between the bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen.

Light the path from bed to bathroom with motion-activated night lights. Most nighttime falls happen on this short route.

Add grab bars near the toilet and inside the shower, use a non-slip mat, and consider a shower chair. Towel bars are not grab bars and will not hold weight.

Review footwear. Backless slippers and socks on hardwood are common culprits; supportive shoes with non-slip soles are safer indoors.
